art exhibition: ai weiwei – circle of animals / zodiac heads at somerset house
Published May 12, 2011Last night saw the bitter-sweet launch and unveiling of Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei’s exhibition – Circle of Animals / Zodiac Heads at Somerset House. The somewhat monumental installation comprises of twelve bronze animal heads, re-creations of the traditional Chinese zodiac sculptures – originally at the fountain of Yuanming Yuan in Beijing.
The darkness behind this moment is that Ai Weiwei was arrested 40 days ago as he tried to board a flight in Beijing and therefore unable to attend the event – his whereabouts still remain completely unknown and Twitter and blog have been shut down. unveiling the pop culture inspirations behind the hyères final collections
Published May 4, 2011This weekend saw the 26th International Fashion & Photography Festival at Hyères, which took place at the stunning and historically rich Villa Noailles. The festival saw the some of the industry’s finest come to play in the tiny, otherwise unknown town for a fashion competition judged by Tim Blanks, Proenza Schouler, Christopher Kane, Cathy Horyn, Carla Sozzani and Raf Simons. Previous winners include Viktor & Rolf and Felipe Oliveira Baptista.
I had a brief chat with each of the ten designers (including winning French designer Léa Peckre) about the pop culture inspirations behind (or aspirations for) their collections.
