Drawing us in with a euphoric, atmospheric R&B vocalization and an intricate piano performance, Drew Williams opens On This Day with a high emotional quotient and notions of timelessness before he shares situational prose.
Drew sings, “The morning light is filtering through the glass, watching every second of the countdown pass, I see my reflection in the polished floor, knowing I’m not that same person anymore…” as he sets the tone for the powerful narrative and message of the track.
His performance is incredible, one of the greatest R&B vocals that we have ever experienced – he has a pristine timbre, a captivating tone and an incredible range. We appreciate the authenticity and poetic prowess that manifests with his lyrics too.
In essence, On This Day is a wedding song, inspired by a personal request from Drew’s sister. The Hickory, North Carolina-based artist confesses, “I created the song initially for my sister’s wedding.” He adds, “Music like this isn’t really out here anymore and I just wanted to be able to share it.”

This feels very apt. Music and the timelessness of R&B has certainly been diluted, and what Drew Williams has created with On This Day truly stands the test of time. It feels like a moment from a 90s movie, cinematic it its design and authentic depth. It truly could have been featured in a film like Poetic Justice, Waiting To Exhale, or How Stella Got Her Groove Back. Fans of Boyz II Men and early Usher would absolutely be able to connect with what Drew is creating.
Drew tells us, “In writing the song, I had to envision how I would feel getting married. In the song, I said I been waiting through the seasons for this very hour to feel the quiet strength of love’s true power. I really meant that from my perspective.”
Needless to say, we are blown away, and grateful that Drew Williams is re-creating such a raw and iconic energy with On This Day. We have added the track to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we anticipate future releases from Drew Williams!
