Establishing the mood with an emotive guitar soundscape and an astral synth frequency, CAR287 open Deep Undercover with cinematic allure and the situational prose, “I’m spun out of control, I thought you did it for love, I searched the corners of your mind, it’s where you like to run and hide, the blind’s leading the blind…”
On a philosophical level, Deep Undercover explores a relationship marked by confusion, secrecy and an emotional imbalance. Our protagonist feels pulled into their muse’s hidden inner world. It essentially reflects the strain of loving someone who retreats, avoids confrontation, and lives “undercover”, by burying unresolved issues whilst appearing functional.
We appreciate the emotional depth and poetic prowess, as well as the raw and authentic delivery of the lyrics. Images of darkness, skeletons and themes of escapism suggest suppressed truths and a real need for change. The recurring train seems to symbolize a possible turning point or emotional departure. Overall, CAR287 poignantly capture the exhaustion of being close to someone who is guarded and evasive, it feels personal as much as it feels zeitgeist on societal level too, which is really what makes the track unique.
We could imagine CAR287 manifesting a plethora of sync deals for the track – it feels like something one might have heard in Smallville back in the 2000s, but also could be perfect for an evocative moment or montage scene in something like Euphoria on HBO or the upcoming Buffy The Vampire Slayer reboot.

The echoes vocal harmonies and ad libs add dimensionality to the track, and the guitar solo is transcendental before an epic final reprise. Speaking on their diverse tastes, the band tells us, “CAR287 [is] so diverse that their Spotify wrapped would look like a battle between Muse and The Tragically Hip, refereed by John Fogerty!”
We learn that CAR287 features Jay Yarmey on vocals and acoustic guitar, Travis Wog on vocals and lead guitar, Terry Ferguson on bass, and Ryan on drums. Deep Undercover is taken from their debut album Looking Through the Lens, recorded at Private Ear Studios in Winnipeg.
We love what CAR287 are creating, and have added Deep Undercover to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of the band, including the entirety of Looking Through the Lens!
