Establishing the mood with a psychedelic and reverberating guitar soundscape with astral strums and a textured drum build, the Julie July Band opens All in Our Minds with notions of cosmic dimensionality. Julie July shares philosophical and metaphorical depth as she sings the vibrant and introspective questions, “Would you believe crystal streams of palest blue? Would you believe magnetic waves that see through you? Would you believe violet trees that join the queue?”
As we are well versed in Julie July’s artistry, we immediately connect with the high spiritual quotient of what she is conveying. These questions are followed by the hook, “All in our minds… all in our minds…” which repeats like a mantra to remind us that life is indeed a cosmic illusion.
We love the poetic depth that manifests – velvet fields of sugar cane, gilded tunics in the rain, twenty-seven liquorice trains – and the fantastical universe that the Julie July Band creates – both sonically and visually.
There is no doubt that All in Our Minds would be perfect on the rooftop of Petit Ermitage in Hollywood, Los Angeles where psychedelic adjacent songs like this invite us into an alternate dimension, providing escapism from the turmoil of the physical world and reminding us that everything is a meta simulation.

Speaking on the release which is taken from the band’s album, Flight of Fancy, the Julie July Band confesses, “All in Our Minds plays with the idea that the worlds we imagine can feel just as real as the ones we live in. We love songs that leave space for the listener, where the meaning isn’t fixed, but shifts depending on how you hear it.”
They elaborate, also with reference to their intention with the album, “Flight of Fancy was about letting the songs be more colourful, more playful, and trusting imagination rather than over-explaining. We’re inspired by the freedom of 70s folk-rock and psychedelic music, but we always want the song itself to come first. There’s a sense of wonder in this track — it’s slightly surreal, but still rooted in melody and feeling.”
As always, we are in awe, and have added All in Our Minds to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TRIPPY and TIMELESS playlists, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of the Julie July Band, including the entirety of Flight of Fancy!
