Establishing the mood with an intimate piano performance and a luscious synth, James Mayes opens Mistakes with a high emotional quotient as he sings, “All my mistakes keep pulling me away, and all this pain, all this shame… When you put me down, set upon me, like I was your prey, you put me down, all my mistakes… I can’t keep going on…”
We immediately connect with the cinematic allure of the piece and the raw authenticity that transpires with the lyrics. In essence, Mistakes is about our lived experience as fallible human beings. James Mayes invites us to accept ourselves for who we are, but also shines a light on those who harm us for being imperfect.
The hook, “We all make mistakes…” feels like a mantra, and through the repetition of this hook, we can finally find catharsis and peace. The production is sublime, anthemic with the drums and dynamic as it switches into a cerebral energy for the middle eight interlude moment, which is iconic.
The vocal production changes here, and we appreciate the dimensionality that James offers with his emotive pop sound. The final reprise is fantastic as James cements his message of self-acceptance. The intentional nature that he has created this track with is not lost on us, and we could imagine it locking in a number of sync placements, notably a coming-of-age movie or TV show like Euphoria on HBO with a poignant scene that mirrors the message of the song.

James confesses, “Mistakes sets the stage for my upcoming EP. This project dives into growth, acknowledgment, and transformation, turning life’s hard moments into a journey of personal evolution. And I’m not stopping there. My future releases will continue to explore deeper layers of emotion and authenticity, giving listeners a reason to stay connected for the long haul.”
We learn that James Mayes is a UK-based producer and songwriter creating cinematic, emotionally driven electronic music. After a period of artistic exploration under the alias James Malaga, he returns under his own name with renewed clarity.
We have added Mistakes to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we anticipate the release of James Mayes‘ upcoming album!
