We recently featured John Smyths as he shared relatable reflections with the wholesome and authentic single, Now I’m Wiser, so naturally, when we heard that John was back with Last Night, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
The track opens with a glistening guitar soundscape, laced with dimensionality and a high emotional frequency as John sings the situational lyrics, “Last night, I walked the line with Cash, we talked about things of the past, we were sitting at the bar and he played his guitar, then I woke up and it seems it was a dream, I guess…”
We appreciate the narrative driven and the expansion of the track with luscious vocal harmonies as John Smyths expands the story with a whimsical edge. John references his muses whom he met in his dream. There is a timeless quality to that track and John really does remind us of Elvis in many ways.
Last Night serves as a heartfelt country ballad that perfectly balances nostalgia and sincerity. We deeply connect with the tender storytelling and emotive arrangement. The fantasy element of the prose invites us into a reflective journey about meeting one’s idols, sharing stories and cherishing moments that shape someone’s life. What makes Last Night so captivating is raw authenticity. The production avoids excess and instead leans into notions of timelessness that truly define great country music.

John Smyths, who was born Johan Smits in Nijmegen, the Netherlands, has long been a key figure in the European country scene. He is influenced by Hank Williams, Waylon Jennings, Kenny Rogers, and Tammy Wynette, and his music reflects passion and perseverance.
It is no surprise that he has performed across Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, bringing decades of experience to every song. His award-winning track Loving You Makes Me a Better Man, and the acclaimed (and recently featured) Now I’m Wiser highlight his steady rise and artistic growth.
We have added Last Night to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the star’s growing discography, and anticipate future releases from John Smyths!
