We recently featured Sean MacLeod as he took us on a cinematic trip with psychedelic 60s adjacency on Romeo, so when we heard that Sean was back with Cool Charisma, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in his universe once again, and share our experience.
Establishing the mood with his signature energy, Sean opens Cool Charisma with the statement, “Good boy trying to get out of the wood…” before a sublime Hammond organ adds a trippy vibe to the composition, detailed with astral guitar riffs, manifesting a kaleidoscopic mood that feels sonically in line with the message of Sean’s lyrics.
The message is cerebral, reflective, eye-opening and self-reflective – themes that we have come to expect from Sean! The layered vocals are incredible, bringing to life that awesome power pop vibe from the 60s. As for Sean’s lyricism, there is no doubt that he is a poet. His narrative-driven brand of songwriting is both introspective, intelligent and cinematic. The song is perfect for a remake of Boogie Nights, or perhaps a coming-of-age movie set in the 60s or 70s.

Sean MacLeod, former founding member of Dublin band Cisco, cites the Beatles, the Beach Boys, and classic Motown as sonic influences, but there is no doubt that the Sean’s psychedelia-laced authenticity shines through in its own unique way.
Beyond the catchy hooks, the song has a thoughtful side. Sean’s lyrics explore philosophical and spiritual themes, adding layers beneath the pop exterior. It’s pop music with a reflective heart. We can look forward to more from Sean, as he will release his album New Start and an experimental record We Don’t See What that We Don’t See.
Naturally, we are in awe, and have added Cool Charisma to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlists, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Sean MacLeod, including Sweetness, and Romeo!
