Establishing the mood with an acoustic guitar soundscape, building with anthemic drums and a blues-folk-pop-rock hybrid energy, The Boy Blue opens Penny To Drop with a lyrical plea as he sings, “I talk to you, because I wanna get through, the high life was good, and right for you, repeating the same things, day after day, I’m trying to help you with the things that I say…. It’s time to break free, for the penny to drop…”
We are immediately captivated by the wisdom and intentional depth that The Boy Blue conjures with his message – which feels zeitgeist, philosophical, universal and captivating. In essence, the song explores themes of self-realization, emotional release and awakening.
The emotional quotient is high, and there is a cinematic allure that manifests – perfect for a coming of age movie or a TV show like Euphoria on HBO. The lyrics are intentionally open to interpretation, allowing us to connect through our own experiences. The message confronts mental health struggles, navigating toxic relationships and ultimately finding a path towards liberation.
As The Boy Blue explains, “I know what inspired me to write this song, however I am aware that these lyrics should be relatable in a variety of contexts. Everything I write tries to carry a message, I try to make my music give an insight into who I am, what I may have experienced and a knowledge that many others have been through these things too.”

We learn that The Boy Blue channels a wide array of influences. He mentions Chris Cornell, which we can feel come through with the power-rock adjacency and brooding vocals – sublime in so many ways. He also cites the soulful grit of Chris Stapleton, aswell as Pink Floyd and the Southern swagger of Lynyrd Skynyrd. These iconic influences deliver a timeless sound that has us on the verge of tears with the power of the message and spiritual resonance of the composition. The British artist leaves us with the prophetic and conscious message, “Open your mind, absorb everything and don’t forget to release. Songwriting is my release.”
We have added Penny To Drop to our New Music Spotlight playlist and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream The Boy Blue’s cinematic and emotive ode to his late father, I’m Your Son which we covered previously as well as his songs, Tiny Feet, and The Smallest Gift.
