We recently featured Mercy Kelly, who took us on a spellbinding and relatable trip with the emotive single, Speak Too Soon, so when we found out that the band was back with Breathe For Her, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
Breathe For Her opens with a rising, gated guitar riser, expanding into a sublime and expansive alternative rock soundscape, glistening with emotion, as the band shares the lyrics, “The walls are closing in on me, in a world fading it’s hard to see…”
We immediately connect with the introspective and zeitgeist energy of the prose, it feels relatable, full of poetic prowess and conscious depth. In essence, Breathe For Her is about love, loss, and the notion of carrying someone else’s weight.
It taps into themes of sacrifice and devotion – the act of living or fighting on for another. We are in awe of the high emotional quotient and the stadium-ready sound that manifests. The message reflects both the beauty and the pain of deep rooted connection. The song also marks a turning point for the band with a big and cinematic sound, echoing influences like U2 and The Killers!

We learn that the production of Breathe For Her took place at the iconic Kempston Street Studios in Liverpool with producer Alex Quinn. Mercy Kelly formed in 2019 in Greater Manchester, starting as an acoustic duo before expanding into a five-piece. Frontman Jack Marland and lead guitarist Adam Bridge started the group, which eventually morphed into its current incarnation with Joel Buckley on bass, Leon Hepke on drums, and Jacob Simpson performing rhythm guitar.
Needless to say, we absolutely love the emotional and spiritual energy that Breathe For Her carries, and have added the track to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Mercy Kelly, and anticipate future releases!
