Establishing the mood with an intricate Spanish guitar performance with organic percussive hits on the side of the guitar, the Knabokov Collective (led by Patrick Costello, who we have previously featured for his intentional music) open Borderline (also known as Borderline: Chaos at the Border) with the situational lyrics, “We’re running for the border now, we’re running for our lives…”
The opus expands with a conscious mindset, reminiscent of activism songs like Bob Dylan‘s Hurricane as Patrick shares an emotive and real tale of survival. The shimmering trumpet and expressive keyboards add further emotion to the politically charged track. The creative ebbs and flows and meditative moment allow for respite before a stunning and emotional reprise! The guitar finale evokes the sentiment of Carlos Santana, and needless to say we are in awe!
The jazz-Latin-rock fusion energy is perfectly cohesive and holds a timeless vibe as Patrick Costello’s passionate vocals echo notions of pain and resilience. Desiree Jolly shares backing vocals which add warmth, in turn creating a textured, emotional sonic landscape for the track.
In essence, the lyrics confront the dire realities of Central America, particularly the 2009 US-backed coup in Honduras. Lines like “Honduras is our home, but gangs control the streets. The coup overthrew Zelaya, left the people on their knees” shine a light on the suffering caused by authoritarian regimes and imperial interests.
The song also critiques the Trump administration’s aggressive ICE tactics and highlights systemic US complicity in immigration crises. The repeated refrain about walls – “Walls, they don’t solve anything, they just redirect the pain” – underscores the futility of militarized borders and exposes the human cost of political indifference.
The music video features world-renowned Flamenco dancer Yaelisa, which further elevates the grace and culture of the song’s message. Through her expressive movement, it visualizes the anguish, resilience, and courage of displaced families.
Naturally, we are in awe of the deeply emotional track and have added Borderline to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of both the Knabokov Collective and Patrick Costello!
