Drawing us in with the sound of a dial tone, as reflected in the single artwork, The Lemon Grove open Pain Knows Your Name with the conceptual, mind-bending lyrics, “It′s okay don’t say what you feel what did you say? “Cause they said you said you might give us away, so are you coming back don′t come back I don’t know…”
We appreciate the ethereal notions, and the emergence of a fierce guitar adds dimensionality to the track. The sonic ebbs and flows are sublime, yet arresting. As for the song writing, Pain Knows Your Name emerges from the emotional rubble of a shattered relationship. In essence, one based on lies and resentment.
There is an evident wrestle with betrayal, anger, and exhaustion, and the relationship sinks into a cycle of hurt. Lines about pain and anger knowing the other’s “name” and “address” show how lasting the damage is, scars that won’t fade. There’s bitterness in wanting to move forward, but also knowing how toxic what they shared has become.

At the same time, the song shows the pull between letting go and holding on. Even while saying they’re “done,” the band admits they still miss their muse and wish for one last moment of unity. That mix of rage and longing captures the push and pull of a breakup perfectly. It is genius songwriting, and showcases the fight between love, memory, and pain.
We can imagine that this would be incredible to experience in a live setting, and as for its cinematic allure – it would be perfect for a performance at The Bronze in the upcoming reboot of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Our favourite line is, “You wanna be a superhero you do, said you′re over us well maybe I should move on too…”
As you can tell, we are in awe, and the meditative final moment lends itself to some catharsis for both the listener and the band! We have added Pain Knows Your Name to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlists, whilst we continue to stream The Lemon Grove‘s debut single, Tame.
