Drawing us in with sounds of a ringing phone and dimensional, brooding frequency with cinematic allure, Gianfranco Malorgio opens Aimlessly with a haunting vibe with Wild West twangs, astral tones and a cerebral nature.
The opus expands with a a reverberating wood block, tapping into a spiritual essence as a dark-Americana guitar performance envelopes us. The key changes add drama, and we are mesmerised by the cohesive, yet mind bending tapestry of sound that feels like a great fit for the score of an episode of True Blood or Westworld.
The guitar performance is out of this world, masterful in nature and precision. We learn that Aimlessly was inspired by the detective films of the 70s. Speaking on the composition, Gianfranco Malorgio confesses, “In recent years I have dedicated myself to composition, working on some songs designed mainly for synchronization, therefore suitable for listening to films, soundtracks, etc.”

Gianfranco Malorgio, trained at the Morlacchi Conservatory in Perugia, founded Hot Club Roma in 2005, inspired by Django Reinhardt. The group performed at major Italian venues and festivals, releasing the album Swing From Rome. He has also collaborated with Dario Pinelli on tours and recordings, including the award-winning soundtrack for La Casa Sulle Nuvole, and has shared the stage with gypsy jazz legends like Angelo Debarre and Dorado Schmitt.
Malorgio has also expanded Hot Club Roma with actor Giorgio Tirabassi, performing in Italy and at London’s “Le Quecumbar.” More recently, he has played with Noè Reinhardt in Rome and recorded in Paris for Moreno Viglione’s Paris Gipsy Guitars (Alboom Media/BMG).
Naturally, we have added Aimlessly to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream Gianfranco Malorgio exquisite, growing discography, including ZTL, The Sleeping Whale, and Phoenix.
