Drawing us in with a padded kick and astral guitar riffs, expanding into a jazz-hybrid energy, mustbejaded open Short King with situational prose as they sing, “She went out that night, her makeup all done, would she, take a look at me? I really wanna touch her, get up close, I need a bigger ladder to get a look at those…”
On a philosophical level, Short King is a song is about attraction, specifically the lived experience of shorter “kings”. The protagonist admires a tall woman. He is playful and humorous about her height. The “short king” line flips typical dating expectations.
Culturally, it reflects social media trends. “Short king” celebrates men who are shorter than average. The song mixes fun, flirtation, and empowerment. The tone is light and cheeky, and the lyrics exaggerate height differences for effect, comparing their muse to a tree. It’s a playful take on dating norms, but there is also a serious nuance to it, considering how shorter men are treated in society. We appreciate this art as activism.
As for the soundscape, the band manifests a cohesive tapestry of sound – it’s smooth – the harmonies are lush, the instrumental performances are out of this world. mustbejaded features Javier Alvizures, Lowrence Knight, Daniel Rivera, Matthew Amador, and Ramon Marzan.
Speaking on the release, the creators confess, “Short King started out as a fun, tongue-in-cheek idea – a short guy shooting his shot with a tall woman. At its core, it’s about confidence and charm in the face of something that’s supposed to be a disadvantage. We leaned into that with a ton of energy and wit, and the result is an upbeat indie rock anthem that doesn’t take itself too seriously but still hits hard.”
mustbejaded continue, “The song was written in a bedroom while our band was just beginning to figure out our sound and style. That raw, DIY spirit stayed with us throughout the process – recorded with limited gear but a lot of heart.”
We absolutely love the output, and have added Short King to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream mustbejaded‘s wider discography, including Voicemails, and Out Of State.
