Setting the tone with an electric guitar introduction, Fiona Amaka opens Cowards and Shadows with a timeless rock energy, tapping into a 90s vibe as she shares the affirmative lyrics, “Breathe, let it out, close the door, you don’t have to keep pretending, you don’t feel it any more…”
We are immediately reminded of early Alanis Morissette as Fiona Amaka conveys her message with a slight twang, reminiscent of the critically acclaimed artist and her signature style. That said, there is no doubt that what Fiona Amaka is unique to her own design.
The strings arrangement amplifies the emotional quotient of the piece, written from a place of deep authenticity on the topic of “ghosting”, as Fiona reminds us that we don’t need to make excuses for anybody else. The prose is empowering, and we deeply connect with how the consciously astute star uses her voice for catharsis and to remind us that we have the power of autonomy.
Speaking on the release, Fiona says, “Cowards and Shadows was recorded in London with producer and guitarist Andy Zanini. The subject of ghosting kept coming up in conversations and in life. People were talking about how ghosting culture has extended out of personal relationships into so many areas, including job-hunting. So I guess this song came up out of that.”

On her process and connection with live audiences, the British talent adds, “I started playing the incomplete song at acoustic open mics and was amazed how quickly people picked up the theme and resonated with it. So I decided to record it.”
We absolutely love what Fiona Amaka delivers with her intentional releases, and as a reminder, the Fiona Amaka Band will be playing at the Camden Weekender Festival on 30 August in London. Fiona tells us, “I’m happy to say we’ll be playing Cowards and Shadows for our fans and listeners there! We’ve had a busy half year gigging around London and we’ve loved every minute of it.”
Of course, we have added Cowards and Shadows to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the exquisite, growing discography of Fiona Amaka, and look forward to seeing footage from her upcoming show!
