Drawing us in with an cerebral guitar melody with brooding chords and a cosmic-grunge adjacency, Zachary Mason opens The Funky Martians with atmospheric lyrics as he sings, “So when their spaceship first touched the ground, the place was empty, no-one was around, but then much later, as the great dust cleared, on the horizon, some Martians appeared…”
We appreciate the psychedelic genre of storytelling and the astral sound nuances with the ad libs, “We come in peace…”. The actual message of the lyrics feels quite zeitgeist, drawing a parallel to how humans and aliens are accepted on a broader scale. It taps into the notion of how we treat each other, with an escapist, playful edge.
In essence, The Funky Martians tells the tale of a human colony landing on Mars who are met by angry Martians. Things look bad until someone accidentally plays funky music. Yes, the power of music will save us all!

To everyone’s shock, the Martians love it. The music calms them down and saves the humans from disaster. Funk becomes the universal peace language. Zachary voices all the characters himself, of course! The message that we can take from this is a credible nod to unity through intentional music – something conscious and important that we try to shine a light on through the artists that we platform.
The pitched vocals are a genius touch, and the experiment detailing is welcome – reminding us of early Bowie. Speaking on the humorous feat, Zachary confesses, “The song is actually the second track on an upcoming EP entitled: 5…4…3…2…1… which will tell the story of mankind fleeing from a ruined earth for the red sand of Mars and a new colony!”
Based in Guildford, UK, Zachary Mason has been creating music since 2021. He’s recorded over 200 demos and gained attention from outlets like Rolling Stone and SPIN Magazine. Several of his tracks have charted or been picked up for film and TV sync. His inspirations include Neil Young, Dylan, Bowie, and The Beatles, which we can feel come through with his artistry, although there is no doubt that Zachary Mason is manifesting a universe of his own. We have added The Funky Martians to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlists!
