We previously featured Sean Lippin when he took us on metaphorical trip with his evocative liberation anthem, Fish Tank, so when we heard that the philosophically profound artist was back with Frenemies, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to listen and share our thoughts!
Establishing the mood with an intricate guitar performance and textured drums, Sean Lippin opens Frenemies with situational prose as he sings, “I go to your party, with no invite I see, old friends we used to be, but these days, you’re too cool for me, that’s all I need to call you my frenemy…”
The opus expands with a poignant and relatable message of friendships that evolve into the notion of frenemies. There’s a cinematic allure to the track – perfect for a coming of age Hollywood movie with a similar narrative to what Sean Lippin is bringing to life. It’s comedic but real.
Speaking on the release, Sean describes it as, “A catchy, ironic anthem about the moment you realize your “best friend” might actually be your worst one.” As for his sonic peers, he cites, “Vampire Weekend meets Neutral Milk Hotel with a hint of Tom Petty’s attitude.”
We can definitely feel this come through, but there is no doubt that Sean Lippin is creating something highly unique. This is further demonstrated by the astral guitar solos and the self-realized verse where Sean realises his worth and essentially says “f- you” to his frenemy and establishes that he too has value!

This is the most important message that Sean imbues with the song. We all are unique. We all have our own unique paths, and we all deserve to feel proud of our achievements and authenticity. In essence, don’t fall for the trap of someone thinking they are better than you – because we are all stardust in our very own cosmic motion pictures, and we should appreciate our own power!
Sean says, “We’ve all had that friend. The one who’s a little too obsessed with their own highlight reel and doesn’t realize they’re the villain in someone else’s story. This song is me laughing through the frustration — and hopefully helping others feel seen and strong.”
Naturally, we love what Sean Lippin is creating, and the message that goes with it! We have added Frenemies to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream Sean’s wider discography, including Run Away, and Hazy Day!
