We previously featured Rubbish Party when they took us on a nostalgic, bittersweet and chaotically sublime trip with Flat by the Lake, so when we heard that the project was back with Funeral For Judith, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to immerse ourselves in Rubbish Party‘s universe once again.
Establishing the mood with a glistening yet mildly cerebral rising energy, Funeral For Judith opens with a stunning strings arrangement and a dimensional, padded kick. The opus expands with dynamism and a cinematic allure as Rubbish Party share metaphorical prose with reference to their muse, Judith and her lived experience.
The track trips us out with recurring industrial sonic riffs that keep us enthralled, leading us to a transcendental chorus as Rubbish Party profess to Judith, “there is no sun without you…”. We learn that Funeral For Judith brings to life a heart-wrenching story written by guitarist and lyricist J. Edwin Galloway.
It reflects on “a past relationship that tragically ended, and the fact that her new relationship after, ended in violence.” The piece features Edward Clutterbuck sharing his emotive vocals and we are completely hypnotised by Evan Zorn Von Berg‘s piano outro as well as J. Edwin Galloway‘s poignant writing and stunning guitar work!

Speaking on the release, the band confuses, “The song is about a girl that J. Edwin Galloway, (guitarist, and lyricist of this song, some have called him a legendary guitarist) used to be close to in school. Galloway relationship took a sudden and unexpected romantic turn that he wasn’t comfortable with. She was a very kind person but he was just too young and immature to give her what she needed at that time. Ultimately, they went their separate ways. Years later he was saddened to hear that her boyfriend had stabbed her to death. This song is about her. An ode to Judith. It is Rubbish Party‘s most emotional track to date.”
The band cite influences including Modest Mouse, The Smiths, Gorillaz, The Kooks, and Radiohead to name a few, but there is no doubt that the universe Rubbish Party is carving our is unique unto their own design.
Funeral For Judith was recorded at Alfred Lavender‘s home studio in Warwickshire, England and sets the stage for the band’s upcoming album, due for release in September. In the meantime, we have added Funeral For Judith to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TRIPPY playlist, whilst we continue to stream Rubbish Party‘s incredible, growing discography.
