Establishing the mood with a transcendental electric guitar performance and soft textured drums, GISKE open Light Upon the Water with poetic prowess as they sing, “There’s a light upon the water, it put a spark back in my heart, so I make my way though tall grass, in search of something that is lost…”
The opus expands with intimacy, metaphorical depth and luscious vocal harmonies as GISKE manifest a vivid and cinematic experience with their words and indie-folk adjacent sound. The narrative that unfolds from the lyrics feels delicate, and picturesque – referencing nature, human emotion, and the lived experience in the vicinity of the band’s homeland.
The piece feels connected and oozes authenticity in writing style and production. We learn that Light Upon the Water serves as the poignant return of GISKE – a long-running creative partnership between childhood friends Alex Rinde and Rune Berg.
The single marks the first release from Ten Visits, Ten Songs, which is the duo’s second album. We learn that the record was created through a series of acoustic songwriting sessions in their native island of Giske, Norway. Rinde and Berg’s collaboration stemmed from a bike ride and a promise they made when they were both teenagers in 1991. Their union has brought to life decades of work together and several projects, including successful work as The Margarets.

Despite health challenges limiting live performances, the duo’s bond remains strong. Their new material reflects their strong past and was recorded at Ocean Sound Studio and featuring a rich ensemble of guest musicians.
As much as the story of the song feels inspired by lived experience, there likely is a wider message at play with regards to the concept of the title and how the illumination of water is so intrinsically connected to source energy and oneness.
We have added Light Upon the Water to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of GISKE, and anticipate the release of Ten Visits, Ten Songs!
