Drawing us in with a highly cerebral soundscape featuring the main body of the guitar production entirely in reverse, HOXSEY not only showcases a genius concept, but taps into our heart’s centre from the offset with Living in Reverse.
Reversed instruments are often featured as synthscape details, risers and nuances details in a composition, but to experience it on such a bold level feels like we have stepped right into an episode of Black Mirror. One might think that the emotional quotient of a song would be reduced with this technique, however, it only feels amplified.
Living in Reverse feels almost prophetic, a concept of looking at like from the end, something that is actually quite philosophical. When we do this, we consider living more in the present and cherishing every moment. It’s like the final scene of Six Feet Under, or watching a movie like Benjamin Button, it feels almost divine and transcendental. The cinematic allure is undeniable.
The lyrics of the song explore life’s cyclical nature, which truly adds a meta and reflective dimension to the track. HOXSEY says, “It’s a nostalgia spring time piece, think back to the first spring you fell in love.”
Speaking in more depth on the recording process, the Austin based rising star confesses, “I was using my 4track and had a recorded guitar on the tape. I flipped it over and there was a haunting beautiful reverse part. I crafted the beats and learned the bass parts.”
Naturally, we have added Living in Reverse to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TRIPPY and TIMELESS playlists, whilst we continue to explore HOXSEY‘s discography and hopefully highlight further tracks in the future!
