Drawing us in with three textured drum hits and a dimensional guitar soundscape with cosmic nuance and a bold, dramatic edge, Rubbish Party open Flat by the Lake with instrumental mastery and a sound design that feels celestially emotive.
The opus expands with lyricism that evokes a nostalgic yet chaotic vibe, reminiscing on a past reality filled with love, struggle and youthful rebellion. We learn that the pose reflects on a time when Evan Zorn Von Berg and his partner lived in a lakeside flat, experiencing somewhat intense passion and hardship.
The overarching message suggests that the pair were young and reckless, unaware of the dangers that were surrounding them. Evan comments, “Flat by the Lake brought all of our band members to tears the first time we played it in unison. It was just a heartfelt, magical experience.

The star elaborates, “It’s a very personal song.” This authenticity transmutes in the delivery, charisma and depth that Evan and his bandmates share. Rubbish Party consists of J. Edwin Galloway, Alfred Lavender, Edward Clutterbuck, and Crimson Creep. We learn that the band met on an online forum about German paganism. Iconic!
Flat by the Lake references a police raid and an ominous reference to “preparing our hearses.” The song holds a mix of dark humour and resentment, particularly in their defiance against authority and rules, like breaking the community pool and getting evicted. This all starts to make sense and feels like the brand identity of Rubbish Party manifesting.
The guitar solo is simply transcendental, and the sonic influences of The Smiths and Gorillaz brings to life the perfect mood for what Rubbish Party represents. We have added the opus to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Rubbish Party, including the entirety of the Love and Decay EP!
