We previously featured The One To Call by John Goldrust – a dark rock anthem of modern love’s decay, exploring the fragility of romance in the age of instant connection and emotional fragmentation. Now, with Rainbows & Rivers Meditations One, Goldrust shifts from introspection to instrumental transcendence, delivering a sonic experience that is both groundbreaking and deeply poetic.
Opening with astral keys and an immersive, melodic guitar performance, Rainbows & Rivers Meditations One is sublime and transcendental from the outset. The composition holds a high emotional quotient, enveloped in an overarching synthscape that feels atmospheric and meditative – aligning perfectly with the conceptual title of the track. It is a cinematic journey, an invitation to connect with oneness, where each note resonates with raw sensibility. Minimalist yet evocative, the piece defies traditional classifications, offering something that feels simultaneously timeless and forward-thinking.
In many ways, this track is groundbreaking, the journey it takes us on is profound. Unlike Goldrust’s previous releases, which centred around dark rock narratives, this instrumental is more than just a guitar solo set to backing music, according to the talented composer, it represents the birth of a new musical philosophy. He says, “This is not a vacuous claim, but is built on a solid justification.”
Goldrust’s lead guitar playing is deeply influenced by the legendary 1970s guitarists – Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, and Santana. Meanwhile, the backing music draws inspiration from the progressive rock bands of the same era, including Yes. These influences are not mere imitations but stepping stones toward an original sound that transcends genre limitations, combining rock’s emotive depth with a meditative aesthetic.

The composition itself is an expression of Goldrust’s research into the mathematical nature of music theory – an approach reminiscent of Bach. It stands as a response to the shrinking sophistication of modern music, set against a backdrop of international turmoil and unrest. The track was originally conceived years ago but resurfaced from old hard drives, where it was rediscovered and developed into a finished piece through days of intense and focused effort. The result is a work of art that speaks to both the intellect and the soul, urging us to reconsider the foundations of musical expression.
Unlike most modern recordings, Rainbows & Rivers Meditations One was tuned to 432Hz instead of the standard 440Hz – a decision rooted in the belief that 432Hz resonates more organically with the human ear. This choice introduced unique challenges, requiring individual note retuning for Logic Pro X’s piano and orchestral string samples. The lead guitar part, originally composed on piano, was recorded in sections – each riff reflecting a new musical pathway. This meticulous approach underscores the track’s depth, making it not just an instrumental piece but a statement about the very essence of sound and harmony.
Goldrust’s journey as an artist is driven by an unwavering commitment to innovation. He is currently performing his songs at The Oxford Poetry Circle meetings, sharing the stage with renowned British poets. Plans are underway to record and film a live performance of Rainbows & Rivers Meditations One featuring John on lead guitar, Funky Paulo on keys, and Dan Glazebrook on jembe. This is not just the beginning of a new musical series but a bold step toward reshaping the future of instrumental composition. Goldrust’s work challenges the constraints of music theory, suggesting that by liberating sound, we may also expand the boundaries of human consciousness. Rainbows & Rivers Meditations One serves as an experience, a revelation, and a call to a deeper understanding of the universe through sound. We have added the opus to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS and TRIPPY playlists!
