Drawing us in with a psychedelic, arpeggiated synth crescendo, BUOS opens Homebound with profound and immersive spoken word with atmospheric, haunting nuance, before the opus expands with an 80s adjacent dark wave energy and textured percussion.
We deeply connect with the overarching dimensionality of the track, and the cohesive tapestry of sound that BUOS manifests. Poetic ebbs and flows guide us inward, in line with the wider message of the prose that is shared.
In a time when nostalgia reigns supreme, BUOS, the one-man band led by a passionate musician who primarily plays guitar and dabbles in piano, offers a refreshing take on synthwave. Having been creating music since 2008, it wasn’t until the pandemic that BUOS truly found his sound, inspired by the likes of HOME‘s Resonance, and other influential artists like Juno Dreams and Carpenter Brut. With a DIY ethos, he crafted his latest release alone in his basement studio, meticulously exploring synthesizers to evoke the deep sense of nostalgia he holds dear.
The 80s drum riffs are magnetic and we could imagine the composition as the score of the latest imaging of The Crow, starring FKA Twigs and Bill Skarsgard. This release is an other worldly experience, designed to evoke powerful emotions, from the feeling of being lost to the joy of self-discovery. Dedicated fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender will find additional depth through well-placed quotes, adding a unique layer for those who appreciate the reference.
Recently, BUOS played his first-ever live show at the Woodlands 2024 festival in Moffat, Colorado – a significant milestone that capped off months of preparation, including learning how to create AI-generated videos to complement his music. It is no surprise that his music has drawn comparisons to the soundtracks of Tron and Stranger Things, capturing the essence of video game nostalgia.
In BUOS‘s own words, “I just want to make music you can drive to. Because that’s often how I enjoy my music.” And with this release, he achieves just that—a perfect soundtrack for those late-night drives down memory lane. We have added Homebound to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our new TRIPPY playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of BUOS, including Cascade, and Delirium!
