We previously featured Seafarers as they took us on a cinematic and hopeful trip with their new opus, Bedwetters, so when we heard that the London-based chamber pop group lead by songwriter Matthew Herd was back with Everything I’d Do (to Get a Hold on You), we were curious to say the least and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
“We’ve seen this before, high school sweethearts getting bored, you said love’s a trading floor, so I’m heading out tonight…” sings Lauren Kinsella, intertwined with intimate keys and textured drums. The opus expands with the tangible emotion that we have come to expect from Seafarers. We appreciate the poetic prowess and relatability of the overarching theme.
The sonic composition is sublime with a stunning saxophone presence, and anthemic moments that keep us captivated throughout. Once again, the piece has a cinematic edge that makes is perfect for Hollywood and Netflix synch deals – the ideal score for an impaired romantic comedy.
We learn that the band designed the composition as a tribute to the great Nashville country ballads of the 1980s, which comes through in its timeless nature. Seafarers confess, “Everything I’d Do (to Get a Hold on You) is set within the throes of a dysfunctional campus relationship. Told from the point of view of someone relentlessly in love, we follow them through the wintry streets of a university town, through bars and bedsits, trying to get a handle on an impossible person.”
Matthew elaborates with reference to his influences, “I love artists like Bonnie Raitt, Emmylou Harris, and Sinead O’Connor, and find their music endlessly powerful. Everything I’d Do (to Get a Hold on You) came from trying to write a song that belongs in their world of heartbreak and yearning, but placing the story somewhere small and futile.”
We love the record, and have added Everything I’d Do (to Get a Hold on You) to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream the wider discography of Seafarers, and anticipate their yet-to-be announced third album coming in October!
