Drawing us in with a cerebral rising frequency, expanding into a luscious and melodic guitar soundscape with textured drums, Icarus Phoenix open High Tide with introspective and philosophical prose as Drew Danburry sings, “You want everything you won’t give, forgive misunderstanding, you want everything you won’t give, forever so demanding…”
The opus expands with a high emotional quotient, poetic prowess and a relatable overarching message with reference to a complexed relationship. Speaking succinctly on the concept of the song, Drew confesses, “I got divorced a few years ago, was somewhat forced to pick up and start over in a new place across the country. I was grinding six days a week at a job working with people who didn’t know me or value me.”
The talented frontman elaborates, “I think the hardest thing about divorce was feeling like my only value were the ones placed on me by my ex and by society, in that, my only value is how much money I can make. What I can provide financially. I was burning out hard and feeling like my only value was my money, status or skill. Society, my ex and my new co-workers constantly reinforced a dehumanizing view of myself. Drowning in dehumanization and the double standard my ex had placed on me, this song was a battle for survival. Plodding slowly forward through the mental sludge that drowns us all.”
We deeply connect with the authenticity that High Tide transmutes, and the emotional depth that the band manifest with their instrumental performances, stunning harmonies, and poignant, self-realized lyricism. The instrumental segment is magnificent, and the lyrical reprise brings us full circle, whilst leaving us yearning for more. The energy of High Tide feels cathartic for both band and listener, and we are grateful for the introspection and healing.
After gaining a cult following through their Son EP, recognized on Stereogum’s albums of note, and a DIY tour in Japan and the USA, Icarus Phoenix are set to release their fourth studio album in August 2024.
The album was recorded in November 2022 at June Audio in Provo, Utah, with producer Jed Jones, who has worked with Post Malone and The Killers. The recording sessions included contributions from longtime friends Jake Bellows (Neva Dinova), Justin Pacheco (bass), and Andrew Young (drums), who helped track 40 songs in 3 days. Additional noise and ambience were provided by Chaz Prymek (Lake Mary) and Rocky Cordray (Teleprom).
The band itself comprises of Drew Danburry on guitar and vocals, whilst Eli Sims slays on the drums, Leena Rhodes shares her soul on guitar, vocals and synth, and Brendan Russell showcases his talent on bass guitar.
We love what Icarus Phoenix are creating and have added High Tide to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our new TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream their exquisite wider discography, and anticipate the release of their album later this Summer!
