Drawing us in with astral notes, a pulsating bassline and a dramatic riser, with guitar riffs and ancestral djembe, The Little Guy open Iain Fauseidou with cerebral prose and a sense of intrigue and dimensionality. The opus expands with an avant-garde frequency to take us on a thought-provoking journey, with exquisite sound design, subversion and a holistic overarching sentiment. Rippling keys draw us further in we are guided towards a culmination rooted in the repeated nature of the enigmatic title of the track.
We learn that the lyrics for Iain Fauseidou were “generated by chopping a random assortment of words into their component phonemes, then randomly sorting these using an Excel spreadsheet.” The creative band elaborate, “The resulting chain of meaningless phonemes were fed into a text-to-speech algorithm set to emulate a female with a European accent. From this, certain phrases emerged which seemed to have meaning but in some unknown language, and the person seemed to be talking about an intriguing character named Iain Fauseidou.”
The Little Guy continue, “The music is based on an impromptu improvisation, with a half-tone key chain adding mystery and intrigue to the atmosphere of the piece. People hear different languages when they listen to this piece, ranging from Afroasiatic through Central European to Nordic.”
Speaking on their innovative creative method, the band add, “Using computerised text-to-speech is incredibly liberating, in that there are no arguments with singers or singers who don’t really want to try something – the computer takes whatever you give it and performs it. This was incredibly helpful with Iain Fauseidou, where the words are really meaningless gobbledigook that would be difficult for a human to convey with conviction.”
With reference to their purpose and intention, The Little Guy tell us how they are more concerned with making music to impress its constituents rather than to garner commercial success. This uniqueness and authenticity feel super tangible, and we appreciate the super conscious nature of their creative process.
We learn that The Little Guy is comprised of David Messer on bass, electric guitar, and synthesiser, whilst David Duloy performs acoustic guitar and drums, and Robert Scott shares his skill on piano, djembe, and voice curation!
We love what The Little Guy are creating, and have added Iain Fauseidou to our New Music Spotlight playlist and our new TRIPPY playlist, whilst we continue to stream the band’s wider discography, including the entirety of their album, The Way It Is Forever.
