Drawing us in with a pristine pop vocal and accompanying, funk-adjacent guitar riff with textured drums, Mery’s Key open Step By Step with observational prose and wisdom, as vocalist Mery Bertòs sings, “You want it all, you want it now… And you know it doesn’t work like that, but somehow your emotions get you off track…”
The opus expands with a tangible emotional quotient, as we are taken on an eye-opening, and relatable journey with the empowering message, luscious harmonies, and an overarching sense of optimism.
The debut single from the duo, consisting of Mery Bertòs and bassist Kevin Reginald Cooke, is designed to bring to life the message of “the universal struggle of wanting so much more, so much quicker”, whilst “[acknowledging] that achieving our desires takes time.”
The creators confess how the lyrics “explore the emotional journey of dealing with impatience and self-doubt, but the anthemic chorus serves as a poignant reminder to the listener that the process must be trusted, infusing the track with both emotional depth and infectious energy.”
We deeply appreciate the conscious wisdom that Mery’s Key amplify with Step By Step, which invites us to go inward, and trust the universe and divine timing – a holistic sense of reassurance that we all need now, more than ever. Fans of John Mayer, Jonathan Brooke, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, and Sara Bareilles will be able to connect with Step By Step, although there is no doubt that Mery’s Key are manifesting a unique sound and message of their own.
As much as trusting the universe holds no guarantees, it does inspire peace, and invite us to imagine every possibility, create every vision, and sometimes, achieve the unimaginable. The philosophy can help us stay in the present moment and any events leading up to a stressful future situation tend to unfold more smoothly.
It is no surprise that Step By Step has been a crowd favourite at every Mery’s Key performance, including Enrico Mentana’s (famed Italian journalist) lifetime career award presentation in Palmanova, Italy and at Trieste Loves Jazz festival, a festival graced by performers such as Cory Henry & The Funk Apostles and The Yellowjackets. We have added Step By Step to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our new TIMELESS playlist, whilst we anticipate their Glastonbury performance, and future releases from the talented duo.
