We immediately connect with the layered vocal design and Michael’s philosophical approach to songwriting, as well as the zeitgeist nature of his message. Speaking on the concept behind the song, Michael confesses, “The Guy Who Won is rooted in a feeling of dismay at being lied to for so long (by the guy who lost), but also in a sense of hope that there are still enough people out there this election year who care enough to make their voices heard – allowing truth to prevail and us to move forward.”
The talented creator passionately elaborates, “Of all the examples of utter nonsense repeated endlessly by our former president, the one that specifically led to THIS song was the lie (he continues to tell) that he didn’t lose the last election. As proven time and time again in recent years, he DID lose that election. While it’s incredible to me that many people have bought into this “crazy talk,” this song is based on the idea that the truth matters and the person worthy of support this election year is none other than The Guy Who Won.”
The opus expands with smart wit and a progressive mentality, as Michael Lyon references the currently political climate and his yearning for an optimistic future. We appreciate the timeless nature of Michael Lyon‘s soundscape and the charming hummed interludes, tapping into an Americana-Folk energy.
Michael cites The Beatles, Chuck Berry, Cat Stevens, Neil Young, Jim Croce, Paul Simon, and Everly Brothers, as well as George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, as his sonic and political influences, which we love and connect with, although there is no doubt that Michael Lyon is manifesting a sound of his own.
We learn that The Guy Who Won was recorded at ReadyMix Recording Studios (aka “Abbey Road West”) in Van Nuys, California, and was engineered and co-produced by Paul Horabin. We have added The Guy Who Won to our New Music Spotlight playlist as well as our brand new TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream Michael Lyon‘s wider discography including his 2023 album, What Could Be.
