We previously featured Kepa Lehtinen for his dramatic and immersive composition, Suru, so when we heard that the talented creator had just released a track called Sade, we were curious and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
Drawing us in with an intricate piano performance and melancholic frequency from the double bass and theremin, we are immediately mesmerized by Sade. The textured cinematic energy has us feeling at one with the universe and the emotional complexity that we all possess. An ability to cry and channel one’s acceptance of sadness.
Speaking on the message of the song, Kepa confesses, “It was inspired by the endless rain and darkness of autumn in Finland and perfectly conveys its atmosphere.”
We briefly wrote about the unique sound of Kepa’s theremin – a hands-free electronic instrument invented in Russia – when we first discovered his compositions. We learn that playing the theremin gives Sade an immense “expressive intensity that sets it apart from his peers in the modern classical music world”, and from our perspective we agree that it is a highly unique sound which resonates on a frequency to inspire heightened spiritual emotion.
When discussing the use of the theremin, Kepa says, “Everybody wonders at my instrument, but it’s the most organic musical instrument there is. It’s in direct contact with my breathing and the rest of my body.”
In essence, the timbre and tone of the touchless, electronic theremin creates emotional depth that few other instruments can deliver. Let’s hope he can bring this to the mainstream, as we feel this in our souls.
We have added Kepa Lehtinen‘s Sade to our New Music Spotlight playlist, and our brand new TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream his wide discography and lose ourselves in his powerful and expansive universe.
