2023 has been a hugely creative year for rising star Edie Yvonne with the releases of the immersive and evocative, On Your Mind, the intricate and atmospheric, Queen Bee, the subversive, Darkness Bliss and the dynamic, Girl Code. Naturally, we were intrigued to hear her final instalment for the year – a cover of Blind Melon‘s No Rain!
Drawing us in with an intricate and immersive guitar soundscape, the cover opens with the memorable lyrics from the original, as Edie sings, “All I can say is that my life is pretty plain, I like watching the puddles gather rain, and all I can do, is just pour some tea for two, and speak my point of view, but it’s not sane, it’s not sane…”
Immediately we connect with the personal and zeitgeist nature of the prose. For the last year, we have listened to Edie establish her artistry through her own words, so it is refreshing to hear her cover a song with a grunge and emotionally quotient adjacency that is not only aligned with her spirit, but the feelings of the world at large.
For some background, No Rain is from the Blind Melon‘s debut album in 1992. This song was written by the bass player Brad Smith and became the band’s breakthrough hit.
With reference to the lyrics, he explained, “No Rain was inspired by just how tough it was in LA. I had bouts of depression. The song is about not being able to get out of bed and find excuses to face the day when you have really, in a way, nothing. It was like rock bottom.”
We love the tempo of Edie’s cover and how relatable the lyrics are ,at a time when artists are struggling, and wars are waging whilst humans and animals are being killed constantly for no reason. The decision to cover and release with producer Douglas Boehm feels wise and philosophically just.
We have added No Rain to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we contonue to stream Edie Yvonne‘s expansive discography, and await future releases.
