Drawing us in with an atmospheric guitar melody and textured vocals with nuanced percussion, Mesmershade open Petrichor with intrigue and thought-proving prose.
The duo, from Tokyo and Honolulu, take us on an evocative and dramatic journey with the opus, which expands with instrumental mastery and awe, as we experience an ode to the pleasant smell that frequently accompanies the first rain after a long period of warm, dry weather.
It turns out that the human nose is sensitive to geosmin (the root of the petrichor smell) and is able to detect it at concentrations as low as 0.4 parts per billion. Some scientists believe that humans appreciate the rain scent because ancestors may have relied on rainy weather for survival.
We love the concept, and the emotional depth that the pair deliver with their poetic prowess and tangible authenticity. We appreciate the haunting edge that Petrichor exudes, as well as the creators’ enigmatic depth, and hypnotizing charisma.
Mesmershade describe the composition as “a vocabulary-expanding hypnagogic gem”, which we can certainly agree with, and there is no doubt that the dup are manifesting a high concept universe of their own.
We have added Petrichor to our New Music Spotlight playlist, as well as our brand new TRIPPY playlist, whilst we continue to stream Mesmershade‘s wider discography, including We Don’t Have to Wait, and Nightmare Sprite.
