Drawing us in with a cerebral, hyperpop-punk adjacent energy, Joonas opens Heavy Water with intrigue, dynamism and an evocative flow as he shares the introspective lyrics, “I got a feeling that all we had is sinking in, a premonition that I’m going under, heavy water, oh heavy water, you always fi-find a way of showing up again, no matter how far away, despite how long it’s been, oh and now I want you…”
We appreciate the metaphorical nature of Joonas‘s prose and his charismatic delivery. The composition holds a nostalgic value at the same time as tapping into a sense of futurism.
Joonas demonstrates an expansive and refined vocal range, and we connect with the tangible authenticity that he exudes with the opus. Heavy Water showcases instrumental mastery as the quick witted artist delves into the complex emotions of falling back into a relationship with a toxic ex.
Elaborating on the conceptual nature of the track, Joonas tells us, “Heavy Water is scientifically known as deuterium oxide, a compound that can be used in the creation of nuclear weapons. Although it appears the same as water it is fundamentally different and becomes very dangerous in large quantities. Falling back in love with the wrong person can feel familiar, but is loaded with unseen complications and potential danger. Just as heavy water can be treacherous when mishandled, so too can rekindling an unhealthy romance.”
Speaking on his artistry, Joonas confesses, “Growing up, I was an always the odd one out, struggling to find my place and lacked the connections that others seemed to effortlessly build. Music quickly became my refuge – a place where I could craft alternate universes and explore parts of myself that I could never see in real life. This approach to music still shapes my songwriting today. My songs are not only an expression of who I am, but who I could have been if things were different. It’s part fantasy and part reality mixed to create a world where others like me can find comfort in not knowing where to belong as well.”
With reference to the release, he adds, “Heavy Water is a testament to this journey. It holds a special place in my heart. It’s angry but seductive, heartbroken but passionate, fantasy but also real. It is undoubtedly me and my style, theatrical but always grounded in actual heart and emotion.”
We appreciate the depth and authenticity that Joonas conveys with his sound, and have added Heavy Water to our New Music Spotlight playlist as well as our brand new TRIPPY playlist, whilst we continue to stream his wider discography including Swimming Pool and Hazel Eyes.
