Drawing us in with a raw and enigmatic guitar soundscape, Adrian Sutherland opens Precious with subversive prose as he questions introspectively, “Whoa now sinner, where you gonna run to now?”
We immediately connect with the philosophical depth that Adrian Sutherland conveys with his poetic prowess and the hybrid energy of country and alternative folk that he exudes with the composition.
The opus showcases instrumental mastery, a brand of intentional songwriting that we love, and a vocal timbre that feels luxurious and charismatic.
We learn that Precious was was inspired by “soulful Black music that came out of the South.” The creator explains, “It comes from a place of being oppressed – something that Indigenous Peoples and People of Colour understand all too well. It’s an ode to the age-old fight for freedoms and rights that is still happening all over the world today.” Adrian adds, “The song also pays homage to Mother Earth and her land protectors.”
There is nothing that we appreciate more than an artist who is using their voice to manifest love and peace, and this is exactly what Adrian Sutherland has to offer.
Born and raised in Canada’s Far North, Adrian is a roots-rocker-with-heart from Attawapiskat First Nation. His melding of rock, roots, folk and blues draws inspiration from his life, the land, and his Cree culture, with songs that ripple far beyond stages.
Precious Diamonds is the title of Adrian’s second solo album, which was produced in Nashville by Colin Linden, and mastered in New Jersey by Greg Calbi and Steve Fallone.
“I am honoured to have worked with Adrian on this album. Adrian is so free… free of pretense, free of constraints, and free of limitations on where his music could go. His life experience and genuine musicality shine through in every note. He is really one of the best and most honest artists anyone could work with,” remarks Colin Linden with reference to their collaboration.
It is clear that Adrian cares deeply about many causes, with first-hand perspective on issues like contaminated water, food insecurity, and mental health. At this time of reconciliation, he tells us that he is hopeful for Canadians to walk together in love and respect.
We love what Adrian Sutherland has to offer, and have added Precious to our New Music Spotlight playlist, as well as our brand new TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream his wider discography and anticipate future releases from the visionary artist.
