Over the last few months, we have been intently following the rise of Edie Yvonne, having featured the immersive and evocative, On Your Mind, the intricate and atmospheric, Queen Bee, and the dramatized tale of a fallen friendship with the subversive single, Darkness Bliss, so when we heard that the talented artist had just released Girl Code, we were curious to say the least, and couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
Drawing us in with a compressed guitar soundscape, expanding after mere seconds into a pristine pop production with vibrant vocal design, Edie Yvonne opens Girl Code with the lyrics, “Girl code and promises breaking like glass, your hand on the wheel and then we crash…”
The opus evolves into a poignant yet metaphorical narrative with philosophical depth as Edie shares her nuanced mind and lived experience with us, through the medium of a charismatic performance and captivating vocal timbre.
We learn that Girl Code is “a response to changing relationships, challenging friendships and the drama of the fragile stage of becoming a teenager.” Creatively tied into her wider body of work, we also learn that “it is a more introspective response to her recent adolescent anthem Queen Bee.”
To bring the concept to life, Edie Yvonne teamed up with producer Rio Root and songwriter Maddy Simmen. We appreciate the dynamic nature of both her performance and the structure of the composition. The track is deserving of a massive synch deal, almost in the style of a 13 Reasons Why type show or a teen rom com.
We have added Girl Code to our New Music Spotlight playlist and our brand new TIMELESS playlist, whilst we continue to stream Edie Yvonne‘s wider discography, and anticipate future releases from the star.
