Establishing the mood with a cerebral, glitch-adjacent introduction and an atmospheric pop vocal, Lauren Minear opens The Way It Was with dimensionality, subversion and evocative prose as she comments on the nature of society.
The opus expands into a thought-provoking ode to consciousness, encouraging us to think outside of the box and address the suppression of the truth and equality.
We learn that the track, which was co-written with and produced by Dan Weeks, was “inspired by the United States Supreme Court’s landmark repeal of Roe versus Wade.” The eye-opening anthem is designed to channel the artists feelings around the current political climate into “a rising, empowering anthem for women.”
We appreciate the depth and authenticity that Lauren Minear shares with her lyricism, as well as her assertive and intricate delivery. The soundscape showcases nothing short of instrumental mastery, and we are captivated by the composition and conscious message.
The choral harmonies add an expansive and anthemic edge, and the cinematic music video nods to the Salem witch trials in a symbiotic and referential commentary on women’s rights. Overall, the piece feels cathartic for both artist and listener.
The Way It Was is the lead single from Minear’s forthcoming album (expected Spring 2024), described as “a colourful exploration of visibility and self-discovery.” We love what Lauren Minear is creating, and have added The Way It Was to our New Music Spotlight playlist, as well as our brand new TRIPPY and TIMELESS playlists, whilst we continue to stream the star’s wider discography, and anticipate the launch of her upcoming record!
