Drawing us in with a meditative frequency and rippling piano, Taiga and The Tundra opens Road to Calluna with elegance and a holistic sense of peace.
The opus expands with astral sounds to take us on an immersive and evocative journey laced with charisma and dimensionality. Serene melodies guide us as the composition evolves into a cinematic nature, with emotive nuances, reminding us of Clint Mansell‘s score for The Fountain.
Road to Calluna showcases nothing short of instrumental mastery, with ebbs and flows which keep us captivated throughout. Speaking on the release, the composer, also known as Thomas Elliott Dolby confesses, “Road to Calluna is about a journey with my father on our motorcycles through the highlands of scotland.”
He adds, “It was both my first time riding with him and my last as he has retired from bikes, and my first experience of this magical land. The piece was made to capture the bittersweet nature and emotions of this and the absolute profound awe of this prehistoric land.”
Elaborating on his creative process, the visionary creator says, “Road to Calluna, the debut of my EP was recorded at my home in Jasmine Cottage, a tiny thatched roof cottage in Oxfordshire. The violin and viola were recorded in a tiny office at Handel Pianos in Sunningdale, Berkshire, [and] the rest of the track was performed, recorded and mixed by myself.”
With reference to his intentional message, Thomas adds, “I tell stories and explore complex emotions conducted by the piano, to memory, visuals or dreams, I hope to give comfort and beauty that resonates with the listener.”
We love what Taiga and The Tundra has to offer and have added Road to Calluna to our brand new TIMELESS playlist, as well as our KIMU New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we await the remainder of the emerging composer’s EP!
