Establishing the mood with percussion textures and an enigmatic, electric guitar soundscape, Gin Wife opens Rat Race with dimensionality and atmospheric vocals as she sings, “I don’t wanna be the one to tell you what is true…”
We immediately connect with the high concept and philosophical nature of Gin Wife‘s prose, and the evocative journey that she takes us on with her message and overarching narrative.
The composition is stunning, with a timeless vibe, immersive guitars and a timbre and flow that evokes memories of the 90s. The dreamy sonic landscape showcases nothing short of instrumental mastery, and needless to say, we are deeply mesmerized.
Speaking on the release of Rat Race, the rising star also known as Sierra Torres, confesses, “This track is a dig at sycophantic behavior and feeling the need to put innocent people down to feel more significant.”
The creator continues, “I was excited to get to channel my angst over being the recipient of this behavior into a little project. Honestly, I wrote this track after feeling slighted by a co worker for not being important enough in the local scene.”
We learn that Rat Race is Gin Wife‘s debut single under her new moniker. Sierra cites The Cranberries, Momma, Sorry, Cherry Glazerr, DIIV, Lucy Dacus, Stella Donnelly, Lala Lala, and Garbage as influences, which we can absolutely feel come through in her sound, although there is no doubt that Gin Wife is creating a universe of her own.
For her live shows, Gin Wife is accompanied by Eli Slaughter on bass, Macy Santa Maria on drums, and Patrick Gleeson on guitar, who collectively perform together under the band name The Tonics, making the live set Gin Wife and The Tonics. Genius.
Naturally, we are obsessed with what the rising artist is creating, and have added Rat Race to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we anticipate future singles from Gin Wife!
