Enticing us with a dramatic piano performance and choral vocal textures, Audri opens her EP, Sugar For The Flies with the track Sensational, which features metaphorical and philosophical prose as the star shares her captivating range and intellectual depth.
The opus expands with a fierce electric guitar as Audri conveys her narrative-based architecture with us. We appreciate the glimpse into her intricate mind, and the retro adjacent soundscape. The fantastical elements come to life vibrantly and the instrumental solo features a luscious strings arrangement. Needless to say, we are in awe.
Speaking on the song, Audri confesses, “Sensational is a story about a journalist trying to destroy a corrupt conglomerate. As the song goes on, the journalist’s true intentions leak through. The journalist’s moral compass isn’t as altruistic and clean as he’d like it to appear.”
The track concludes with a guitar finale, which leads us onto Black Out which has a Bowie meets Garbage vibe, retaining Audri‘s signature songwriting style and theatrical nuance themed around generational trauma and coping mechanisms. She tells us, “It follows a young man who had a neglectful upbringing and is filled with rage. He doesn’t want to be like his father, yet keeps reflecting his father actions. He sees the similarities, but doesn’t know how to get out of the loop.”
Next up is Girl In Blue which opens emotively before a seductive guitar solo enthrals us and the star delivers a unique cadence, akin to spoken word vibes juxtaposed with sung elements as the star asks us, “Does it make you scared?”
We appreciate the drama that the star offers with her sound and lyricism. Her vocal range is really flawless and the intentional nature that Audri creates with is tangible. Elaborating on the message, she says, “Girl In Blue is the embodiment of ‘I told you so’. It’s about when a friend is dating someone you warned them about. After their relationship falls apart, that friend acts like don’t know what went wrong. This song is a response to that situation.”
We are still reeling from the emotional finale of the track, so the comforting intro of Angel In The Grey, which we learn is about someone finding out they are falling in love with their friend, brings us a sense of peace before taking us on a journey of its own.
The way we can feel the lived experience of the star through her words demonstrates a unique talent in Audri. She adds, “It’s less about a romance and more about someone finding a vulnerability in themselves that they didn’t know they had. A feeling of release, the light at the end of the tunnel.”
We learn that Sugar For The Flies is Audri‘s fifth EP, and since 2020, her music has accumulated over 1.7 million streams. We love the profound nature of Audri’s work and the charm and passion that she performs her songs with. We have added Girl In Blue to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whist we continue to explore Audri’s wider discography!
