We have been supporting the conscious artistry of Eric Cohen for some months, so when we heard that the star had just released the Choir Version of On The Edge, we couldn’t wait to listen and share our experience.
Opening with an enigmatic and rippling piano performance and textured riser, Eric opens On The Edge with metaphorical prose as he sings, “Walking on the edge again, I see my life is teetering, walk away from everything, the hate inside is lingering, how can I escape the pain…”
We can always count on Eric Cohen for emotional depth, self-reflection and authenticity, and this is just what On The Edge offers. The choir comes in just after Eric sings, “Pull me from the darkness, Lord I need your change…”, responding with an astral, “Please, Lord, I can’t breathe, I’m calling out in Jesus’ name, I need you desperately….”, and begging the One to lift us from the pits of misery.
Eric breaks into a hypnotizing rap verse with an accompanying guitar riff as the star touches on themes of desperation, melancholia, pain and suffering. The choir returns with a variation of the original prose, and we are fully in awe of the opus as a whole, which is not only relatable, but lends itself to an incredible sense of catharsis as we join Eric and the choir in a bid for peace and abundance.
The piano outro is divine, and we experience the choir once more for the finale. Speaking on the meaning of On The Edge, Eric Cohen confesses, “This is a message that comes from the very depths of my heart. It talks about suicide and being on the edge of life. It is a cry out to my savior, the only one I know who can rescue me!”
We have added the Choir Version of On The Edge to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to immerse ourselves in Eric Cohen‘s connected and profound discography.
