The fabulous and often subversive trio, 9 o’clock Nasty have returned with a brand new single, titled Bird of Happiness, so we absolutely had to tune in and share our experience.
Opening with a glistening and psychedelic riff, before expanding into a luscious guitar soundscape, Bird of Happiness opens with a stunning, layered power pop vocal and we are actually quite stunned.
Bear in mind, we have explored 9 o’clock Nasty‘s genre-expansive discography in quite some depth, so to be met with such a beautiful and elegant performance reminiscent of The Beach Boys and The Beatles, we were pleasantly surprised to say the least!
Speaking on the release, the band tell us that Bird of Happiness is “a song about the pain of love. By no means the first, but probably the best.” They continue, “[It’s] a song about the journey from content self-sufficiency to the ache of missing the person that completes you. Experience the joy. Bask in the glow. Then feel the gut wrenching ache when it could all be taken away.”
9 o’clock Nasty admit, “We usually write about sex, but this one really is about the purity of forlorn lovesick despair. Perfection is rare. Bird of Happiness is a song that is far more than the sum of its parts.”
Written and performed by 9 o’clock Nasty, the track also features the tangible presence of Meg Cratty of The Margaret Hooligans. We connect with the cohesive tapestry of sound that they create together, and the uplifting nature of the prose.
Commenting on the sonic diversity that the track has to offer, the band say, “We’ve been described as bending and skipping genres, but the truth is we listen to each song’s soul and we make it how it needs to be.”
We love the expansive nature of what 9 o’clock Nasty create, and have added Bird of Happiness to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream their wider discography including Savage Mechanic, and Dude, Your Mom’s a Squid.
