We recently had the pleasure of featuring Unca John for his introspective and inspiring debut single, How the Hell?, so when we heard that the visionary, rising artist had returned with Your Opinion, we were curious to say the least!
Immersing us with a vibrant, electric guitar soundscape with nostalgic nuance, Unca John opens Your Opinion with assertive lyrics, as he sings, “You’ve got a right to your opinion, you’ve got a right to your tin foil wearing, troll farm sharing opinion…”
We are immediately drawn in by the star’s wisdom and unapologetic perspective on reality. It is clear that the opus doubles as catharsis for the artist as well as anyone privileged enough to experience the song.
Speaking on the release, Unca John candidly confirms, “Your Opinion is a catchy, upbeat track with edgy, funny lyrics satirizing conspiracy theorists, gun nuts and other miscreants of the American MAGA right.”
When discussing the structure, the artist from Baltimore adds, “Musically the song is propelled by a strong lead guitar riff and a loping bass line. The bridge adds musical variety through harmony vocals and a bright piano sound. Overall this is a retro-flavored track with acid-tongued wordplay in the Elvis Costello tradition.”
We love the depth that Unca John shares, and the intention with which he creates. The track serves as a phenomenal follow up to his debut. With reference to his instrumental mastery, Unca John tells us, “I’m a card-carrying band nerd (sax and clarinet), and I’ve been writing and playing jazz and choral music most of my life. I started recording rock songs a couple of years ago, once I realized that I can generate any guitar or keyboard sound I want using a laptop, Audacity, music notation and Guitar Pro 7.5. I bought an AKG mike to record myself on vocals, sax and drums. So my music isn’t exactly garage rock or bedroom pop; more like kitchen table rock.”
Naturally, we have added Your Opinion to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream How the Hell?, and anticipate future releases from Unca John!
