Once we heard that JUNK, our favourite pioneers of jazz and funk hybrid music, had just dropped their eponymous track, We call it JUNK, we couldn’t wait to listen and feed back!
Teasing us with breaths and intricate percussion, along with self-realized words with reference to their artistry, JUNK open We call it JUNK with a fierce energy as they share the prose, “I never listened to the haters when they said we couldn’t flow…”
The opus expands with thought provoking lyricism with reference to the critique of one’s artistry, at the same time as being one’s greatest fan, which is frankly relatable to any artist. JUNK showcase their versatility, their compositional prowess and their confidence, which lends itself to an empowering energy.
In turn, we get to know the creators and how their mindsets work on a more impactful level, all whilst feels inspired in our own right. Elaborating on the release, the artists confess, “After hundreds of critiques on our work we have decided to put one out there that defines our GENRE! No on can seem to put a finger on what type of music we play, so as our own biggest fans and our own greatest critics we decided to drop this JUNK-genre, hip-hop and classical funk track to let you know what we call it!”
We absolutely love the message that bandmates, Aaron “Dubl A” Seener, Dale “Dirty D” Pearson, and Nik “Anthem” Mathews convey. Their confidence and assertive nature is unrivalled, and we embrace the cementing of the genre expansive soundscape in the form of this anthem!
They tell us, “The song addresses all the armchair critics from the peanut gallery who compliment the music but won’t play it on their playlist or radio station.”
There is no doubt that their uniqueness is their superpower, and in time, the mainstream will catch up with JUNK! In the meantime, we have added We call it JUNK to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream their wider discography!
