As massive fans of WOTTS, we have been super inspired by their new era and patiently waiting for them to drop their latest single, garden. Before we kick off, we love how the duo shifted from all caps to small letters for their song titles this cycle. It’s small details like this that really show the intentional depth that WOTTS have to offer!
Introspective prose, and a bright melodic plucked string with cosmic textures entice us as WOTTS share their souls. We love the situational nuance and the expansive nature as the pair refer to the growth of a garden with their hook.
The soundscape is idyllic, full of natural world descriptors, and a stunning astral synth that really elevates the sound design. There are luscious ebbs and flows within the architecture of the piece, and the opus feels like another great step in the evolution of WOTTS‘s discography, as well as a fitting conclusion to the EP, as garden marks the closure of the current EP cycle, which also features blue, and wheel.
Speaking on the message of garden, WOTTS confess, “The song’s a metaphor about escaping into your own world. For us, that ‘world’ is a place to create, heal and grow.”
The piece even has a dial up phone sound and answer machine message segment, encouraging us to “try again”, which works within the overall intention of the duo’s artistry.
garden, which was produced by band-mate Jayem coninues to focus on the overall theme of “life and mortality”. He explains “We usually like to keep things light, but for whatever reason we had all these pent up feelings about life and living that were bursting to get out. Maybe some people will be able to relate, maybe not, all I know is it felt good to get some of this stuff off my chest.”
He continues, “I find it hard not to escape into music. I think I just love the idea that it’s my own little refuge from the world.” We appreciate the escapism and have added garden to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream the EP in full!
