We recently featured The Freight for their commentary on the human condition with the immersive and emotive single, Overrated, so when we heard that the band had just released a cover of Gwen Stefani‘s Cool, we were curious, and couldn’t wait to experience the track, and feed back!
With a refined an astral version of the signature riff from the opus, The Freight immediately show that a cover can have it’s own futuristic identity, and the seamless and elegant mix of the high hook showcases a taste of the instrumental mastery that the band has to offer.
Erin MacKenzie shares a charming vocal with luscious layers, referencing the delivery of the original, whilst simultaneously making the song her own. Erin’s confidence grows as the song expand, and she’s joined by lead singer Adam on vocals.
Speaking on the release of Cool, the band confess, “This song has been given new life and it’s going to hit the nostalgic who remember and love the original and people who have never heard it before.”
Tapping back into the meditative message of the song, it’s clear why The Freight wished to cover it, and it encouraged us to continue to stream their wider discography, including See Ya, and Show Me.
We have also added, Cool, to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream The Freight, and anticipate future original releases from the band!
