Drawing us in with an elegant and timeless guitar soundscape with pulsating drums, Tara MacLean opens That’s Me with ethereal vocals, and introspective, yet metaphorical prose. Needless to say, we are hypnotized.
The opus expands with thought-provoking depth to take us on a self-realized journey with the artist, as she shares her spirit and soul with poetic prowess.
We learn that That’s Me was initially written in 1994 at the age of 21 amidst shadowy times and “falling through a succession of harrowing trap doors”, which is all described in the talented artist’s memoir. Speaking on the release, Tara confesses, “This song reflects my core nature and continues to be my North Star. I wanted to revisit this song as a woman to see if I could break ingrained patterns my psyche refused to let go of. I lowered the key and wove in fresh maturity, insight and perspective.”
We appreciate the authenticity, wisdom and vulnerability that the star exudes, and there is no doubt that fans of Sarah McLachlan, Brandi Carlisle, Heather Nova, Aimee Mann, Tori Amos, and Dido will be able to connect with Tara MacLean‘s archive, although it is clear that she is creating a universe of her own.
Naturally, That’s Me comes with a cinematic music video showcasing an incredible performance from Tara. She professes, “I always loved to dance, but after an assault I began to dissociate from my body and had no recall when it came to movement. I devised a concept to dance on camera, but with the support of two master movement artists who represented a rebalance of the male and female aspects of the psyche, working together in the liminal space to free the past and see the true beauty again. Many symbols in the video relate to my memoir; the window, the flowers, the corset. This video represents the reclamation of innocence and deepening of wisdom.”
Following their joint tour, Dido tells us, “I have been a huge fan of Tara MacLean’s voice and poetic songwriting since we toured together . She is extraordinary live and inspired me and my show in so many ways. Tara is wide open, charming, brilliant and funny and you’ll fall in love with her just like I did.”
We love what Tara MacLean is creating, and have added the emotionally profound new (and also archive) single to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream the visionary and compelling artist’s legacy discography including If I Fall.
