Over the last few months, Luke Frees has been sharing an incredible and expansive body of work, and today’s release of Honeycomb Hotel further cements the legacy of this visionary artist.
Setting the tone with rolling drums and a funky, astral electric guitar riff, Luke Frees shares situational prose with reference to the end of a romantic connection. Laced with metaphors, the star takes us on an evocative journey as he sings, “She don’t miss you anymore, the empty house, the dusty wooded floors, you’re better going to the Honeycomb Hotel…”
The guitar performance holds an epic sense of nostalgia, and we love Luke’s approach to songwriting, as always(!), but particularly with regards to the sense of empowerment that he shares with his words on Honeycomb Hotel.
Speaking on the release, Luke Frees confesses that the opus is “inspired by the fresh-air feeling you get when you come out the other side of a breakup.”
We appreciate the wisdom that he shares, and Luke tells us that the lyrics in the bridge sum up the message of the piece, “You can’t overstep if you’re scared to walk, and you can’t lose your voice if you never talk, so just come out of your shell. You’re either living the dream or you’re dreaming through life…”, the star tells us that the song is about “taking control of your own life again.”
Citing David Bowie, Prince, and Jeff Buckley as some of his influences feels natural for Luke Frees, and we appreciate his references and how he brings them to life in his own unique way.
We learn that Honeycomb Hotel was recorded at Luke’s home studio in Chicago on his Fender Telecaster. Luke produced and mixed the song himself, before sending it to Garrett Edson in Los Angeles to master. The drums are played by the talented Gary Zucker!
Honeycomb Hotel has been added to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Luke Frees‘ growing discography, including Strings, and Moonshine Queen.
