Establishing the mood with a bright and dimensional synthscape, Draumr opens In a Daze with hypnotizing, astral melodies and atmospheric vocals with metaphorical, yet introspective lyricism as he sings, “What took you so long to find me? On this endless day of winter, it’s as if my soul had left me, any hope was getting slender…”
The opus expands with instrumental mastery to take us on an immersive avant-pop meets new-disco hybrid trip, designed to follow the steps of “a bewildered protagonist lost in the heart of a daunting city.”
We appreciate the poetic prowess and charismatic delivery that Draumr shares with his performance, and the cohesive tapestry of sound that he creates with his vocal design and the 80s adjacent production.
The opus has a synthetic and industrial middle eight, which lends itself to a more subversive edge taking us through to a luscious and emotive finale. In a Daze comes with a luscious, self-directed red-tinged music video, with a super engaging performance from the star and cinematography by Théo Robin Meyer.
We learn that Draumr is the solo project of French musician and producer Gabriel Cheurfa, who describes his sound as “ethereal dream pop and glo-fi”, which we are included to agree with! Draumr means “dream” in ancient Norse, and the star tell us that the project is “born of the dialogue between imagination and reality, and deals with the sensitivity of those whose affinities lie beyond society’s addiction to sensationalism, far from the deafening battle for our attention, whose lively flame too often silently die out under the weight of an inhumane reality, these dreamers who seem today increasingly rare.”
We have added In A Daze to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Draumr‘s wider discography, including his 2020 album, Drawn-Out Daydream.
