We previously featured Sweeter than Sorrow for the release of his cathartic and atmospheric single, Into the Night, so when we heard that the talented star had just released, somersaults, we couldn’t wait to experience it!
Establishing the mood with elegant keys and a vinyl texture, Sweeter than Sorrow opens somersaults with a brooding vocal timbre, poetic prowess and a signature atmospheric energy as he sings, “In my dreams, we’re in love for the first time, we are young, we are free…”
The opus expands as the star from Gothenburg in Sweden sings, “I am doing somersaults with you, the sun is shining and the sky is blue…”, before layered vocals take us on a transcendental journey.
We learn that the idea for somersaults came to Sweeter than Sorrow, also known as artist Mattias Wåhlberg, “during a turbulent time.” Wåhlberg sought to ease his pain and remembered the feeling of being in love for the first time which grounded him. He hopes that the genuine innocence vested in the track will help more people in need.
Sweeter than Sorrow elaborates, “For me, it’s like me trying to come home to myself. Create something stripped down, a voice close and honest, beautiful, heartfelt. It’s a therapeutic project in that respect. Playing to my strengths with delicate piano and voice, bringing forth the vulnerability that’s always been in me.”
He continues with wisdom, “To cultivate love in yourself, nurture it daily. Make your chest soften from the inside and out. Be there. It’s worth it a thousand times.”
We appreciate the metaphorical and healing nature of the composition, and have added somersaults to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Sweeter than Sorrow‘s wider discography including Like Water Is Flowing, and Into the Night.
