The talented and often provocative legends, 9 o’clock Nasty have returned with another signature Saturday release of their brand new single, The Gastronaut, and needless to say, we couldn’t wait to experience it!
Kicking off with a dimensional bassline, bold drums and add libs asking, “Hey, what’s cooking?”, 9 o’clock Nasty open The Gastronaut with metaphorical prose.
The encourage us to let our juices flow, and ask the important question, “What happens when the sensual pleasure of food just becomes… well, sex? What really is the best thing you can do with your mouth?”
Speaking on the release, the trio confess, “The Gastronaut is probably the least obvious and yet most direct thing we’ve ever done.”
We love the mantra-esque and affirmative delivery of their lyricism, and the subversive nature of what they convey, which fundamentally is also a timeless construct. The manner in which 9 o’clock Nasty share their wisdom is really what sets them apart from their peers.
They elaborate, “The Gastronaut is the sound in our heads. It is what the voices whisper to us when we try to sleep.” With reference to the creative process, Pete, Ted and Sydd tell us, “Our studio is on a boat. To record this song, we tried to get a piano onto the boat. We had no idea how heavy a piano is, and even less of an idea of the catastrophic effect it would have on the boat.”
The continue with (literal) depth, “The Gastronaut was recorded in a mad nine hour dash before we had to abandon ship. There are no second chances to record a vocal when dirty river water is coming up through the floor. Our studio has now been relocated to a building and boat is awaiting a crane to recover it. Except the piano. It belongs to the fish now.”
The Gastronaut comes with two music video, one set in Las Vegas, showcasing epic performances from the trio, as they bring to life their high concept, yet relatable vision.
We love what 9 o’clock Nasty create, and have added The Gastronaut to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to watch both videos, immersing ourselves fully in the trio’s gripping universe.
