Drawing us in with an expansive and immersive, alternative country meet Americana-folk-pop hybrid soundscape, Little Lore opens Normal with atmospheric vocals and thought-provoking, introspective lyricism.
The opus expands with a self-realized energy as Little Lore shares “a driving Americana tune full of energy and observation about the choices we make to fit in.”
We appreciate the authenticity, and poetic prowess that the star conveys with her experience, and the wisdom that she shares with her prose. The cohesive tapestry of sound that she delivers with the support of Oli Deakin showcases instrumental mastery, needless to say, we are in awe.
We learn that Little Lore is the moniker of London-based artist Tricia Duffy. The rising artist confesses, “I wrote Normal when I was isolated in my bedroom with COVID. I had been locked in my room for about five days at the time I picked up the guitar – I was feeling much better, but still testing positive. My husband travels a lot and couldn’t risk catching it so I had to stay away from the family.”
She continues, “I am a huge fan of Jeanette Winterson’s writing. Her memoir is called ‘Why be Happy When you Could be Normal’ and this title really resonated with me as I have a lot of very strong feelings about how socialised we are to accept things because that’s what is done or expected rather than what makes us happy or fulfils us. I was using an old Guild Songbird guitar to write with – it has a very twangy sound which instantly inspires me to write in a higher registers.”
With reference to her work with her co-producer, Little Lore says, “As always Oli Deakin has worked his magic with the arrangement and production, really emphasising the syncopation and building the energy of the song.”
The artwork for the single is designed by Afiya Paice, with the intention to bring to life the notion of female empowerment. We love what Little Lore is creating, and have added Normal to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Little Lore‘s wider discography, including Birds, and Shallow.
