Setting the tone with a vibrant and fierce electric guitar soundscape, Mooncult open Ghost Song with intrigue, dimensionality and situational, yet metaphorical prose. Out of this world guitar solos carry us through the opus, creating a cohesive, but cerebral tapestry of sound with authentic depth. Needless to say, we are in awe.
We appreciate the philosophical approach to song writing and the instrumental mastery demonstrated by Mooncult, which is both refined and expansive. The final reprise holds an anthemic energy and the end of the composition has us yearning for more.
We learn that Ghost Song is the first of six singles that we can expect from the Deathrock meets Nugaze hybrid band from Brooklyn, New York. Mooncult design their sound to be “a blend of dark and atmospheric post-punk, catchy pop melodies, and aggressive noise.”
The band was originally formed in Echo Park, Los Angeles by songwriter Raven Mystere and inspired by Siouxsie and the Banshees, Cocteau Twins, Autolux, Broadcast, 13th Floor Elevators, Syd Barrett, Sonic Youth, The Pixies, and The Cure, but it is clear that Mooncult are creating a universe of their own.
The current line up of Mooncult features Raven Mystere on vocals and guitar, Rajeev Ananda slaying on lead guitar, with Tia Cestaro on drums whilst Grover Doyle plays bass. Their next show is at Home Sweet Home tonight, April 23 with friends Skorts and Silent Mass as well as DJ set by Rafting!
We have added Ghost Song to our New Music Spotlight playlist, whilst we continue to stream Mooncult‘s 2020 album, Swallow Me Whole.
